The 2014 TPS Friends of Education have been selected. The Friends of Education award is sponsored by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force. Its purpose is to recognize those within our community who have made outstanding contributions to public education and provides an excellent way for our district to thank some of our strongest supporters. The 2014 Topeka Public Schools Friends of Education winners are:
School Volunteer: Stacey Harry
Stacey works nearly year-round as a volunteer with the Topeka West Charger Band’s Color Guard team. For the past twenty years, Ms. Harry has coached tryout clinics, auditions and summer camp, assisted with band rehearsals, and sewn costumes and flags for the entire Color Guard team.
Community Leader: John B. Dicus
As President and CEO of Capitol Federal Savings, Mr. Dicus has been a generous friend of Topeka Public Schools. Under his leadership, Capitol Federal has donated over $3 million to the construction and expansion of Hummer Sports Park’s natatorium.
Public Sector Institution: Service Master
For the past two years, Service Master Clean has made Christmas brighter for some of our most needy families. Each school in our district has received a $40 Dillon’s gift card for the purchase of food for a family of the school’s choosing. The gift card is a major part of a school’s effort to adopt the family of a student or staff member in need.
Community/Civic Organization: United Way
The United Way of Greater Topeka has pledged $375,000 to fund Pine Ridge Prep, Topeka Public Schools’ pre-K facility. This money has financed the hiring of staff members and the supplies necessary to educate 50 full-day students and prepare them for kindergarten.
Business/Partner Activities: The Bridge
Since 2008, The Bridge has supported Meadows Elementary students through an after school program. The program offers tutoring, enrichment activities and even meals. They also have a lunch buddy program that provides 39 mentors to the students of Meadows.
The TPS Friends of Education winners will be entered in the state-wide Friends of Education contest. They will also be recognized at the April 17 board of education meeting.
