TOPEKA, KAN. – With the April 15 tax deadline looming, United Way of Greater Topeka is promoting two free tax preparation options for low-to-moderate income families. The VITA/AARP tax preparation program offered by K-State Research and Extension has 10 area sites set up. Download a brochure with the sites at http://www.shawnee.ksu.edu/doc3118.ashx. United Way of Greater Topeka provides $5,000 to K-State Research and Extension to support the VITA tax preparation program. In 2012, the VITA/AARP program helped local taxpayers receive $9,062,383 In federal refunds and pay $847,934 in taxes owed. The free tax assistance also saved taxpayers approximately $1,777,950 in tax preparation fees. (Source: IRS)
The myfreetaxes.com site is free for Individuals or families with a combined income of $58,000 or less in 2013. It is sponsored by United Way Worldwide, Goodwill Industries, the National Disability Institute and WalMart.
