Kathy Smith Joins United Way of Kaw Valley as VP for Douglas Co. Initiatives

Lawrence transplant is lifelong Kansan with extensive nonprofit experience

Jan. 17, 2023, Lawrence, Kan.— United Way of Kaw Valley (UWKV) has named Kathy Smith as its new Vice President of Douglas County Initiatives.

Kathy Smith is the new Vice President of Douglas County Initiatives for UWKV.

Smith lives in Lawrence and is a third-generation Kansan. She began her nonprofit career in arts development and leadership. She also has experience with nonprofit grantmaking, event planning, organizational convening, donor development and relationship building.

Smith will oversee community investments in Douglas County, including grant-making, building relationships with agency partners, and strategic planning for the future of impact throughout the community.

Her office is located in UWKV’s new location at 1127 Iowa St. in Lawrence.

Smith grew up in Topeka and previously worked for ARTSConnect, Topeka Civic Theatre and Academy, the Topeka Community Foundation and Valeo Behavioral Health Care.

In September 2022, United Way of Douglas County merged with United Way of Greater Topeka to form United Way of Kaw Valley (UWKV). UWKV serves as a grant maker, community convenor, volunteer organizer and strategic partner for the nonprofit sector in Shawnee, Douglas, Jackson and Jefferson counties in northeast Kansas. Donor dollars are invested locally and support a broad range of initiatives that benefit the whole family in education, financial stability and health, as well as racial equity and family supports/basic needs.
